Comics fan- yeah, that’s me

If I am made the dictator of the world for a single day, I will make it compulsory for each and every bathroom to stock as many books as possible. I do not give a damn about world peace and goodwill for mankind because those things can take care of themselves as long as there are enough comics on the planet. My friends often get surprised by the intensity of my enthusiasm. The funny thing is that if they were probably as interested in enthusiastic about comic books as I am.

Illustration challenge

posted by admin in 1

Working in illustration, every now and again you get a job which you’re not sure what to do with. One such job came through my door last week, or should I say office…

The brief was to design leaflets advertising a new RMN jobs course (RMN stands for Registered Mental Nurse) happening in central London. It had to feature the following:

An illustration of a registered mental nurse.

An illustration of a patient.

Some words integrated into the design which made being a RMN sound both exciting and responsible and fulfilling.

A title which wasn’t condescending or childish, but that was fun too…

So, as you can see, I had quite a challenge on my hands.

it’s all about establishing the right tone, don’t you know

Here, now, is how I went about solving the problem. Feel free to steal my ideas if you’re just starting out in illustration, too.

  1. I started by looking at what leaflets had been done in the past: this is always a good first thing to do, and it makes sure that you don’t do something outdated. I also looked at past advertising campaigns across the board in the NHS, to see if I could find any inspiration there or anything to guide me.

  2. I then worked on some fonts, running the ideas by someone who is more experienced. I looked at different kinds of fonts which have been used for everything from child’s wear to fun and lively magazine typefaces. Then I tried to find the most suitable one and looked at placement.

  3. Now I had a vague idea of where I was going, and which colours I was going to use to establish the right tone (it’s all about establishing the right tone, don’t you know). My next job was to go through a photo archive and find a fairly up to date photo of a nurse which I could make a picture of. This was crucial, as I didn’t want to give the impression that the job was old fashioned.

  4. Finding a photo of a patient – which would be illustrated, like the photo of the nurse – was trickier, so in the end I decided to make the nurse the focus and have the patient in the background doing some fun activity.

Now I had all this I could create a mock up, using the photograph as the basis of an illustration. Which worked a treat, and made the client very happy.

Who ever thought buying fuel could be so difficult?

Who ever thought buying fuel could be so difficult?

You’d think by now that I would have the whole conversion thing pretty well figured out, I’m almost embarrassed to say that this just isn’t so. While I’ve found that there are many differences in spelling and the use of words here in London compared to back home the one issue that continues to stump me are measurements and conversions.
This is no more apparent than anytime I need fuel services, whether it is to put gas in my More

Home is Where the Song is

I have been thinking a lot about what makes a person feel at home. My friend told me that the Bedouin people who are often on the move and have no place that they call home, invoke their sense of home by singing their songs. For these nomadic people home is where you pitch your tent and sing your song. I have tried to embrace many things in order to feel at home in the UK from More

At school, on the day of the year when we were allowed to wear the kinds of clothes we wanted, I got teased mercilessly for my fashion sense. Or lack of fashion sense, as the other kids said. I didn’t care: I loved wearing leggings and a skirt and I thought I looked cool. Did I stop wearing my own perfect kind of fashion? No way! It didn’t matter to me that everyone thought I was a bit strange. I More

Less Expensive Forms of Short Term Health Insurance vs. Cobra

Many employees that leave employment also leave their employer-sponsored healthcare protection behind. This is often a chancy move, particularly if you do not have other insurance coverage choices easily available to you.

COBRA is an alternative that provides you the right to maintain your insurance coverage from your prior employment, but the month-to-month monthly premiums are often very costly and something that lots of us merely can’t pay for while out of work.

The Coast

I recently saw an amazing Rebecca Lardner exhibition and it made me desperate to head back to the good old United States. That seems stupid right? Well the pictures of the seas and coast reminded me too much of an ill spent summer on the coast of Maine. All I did was drink really good local brews, date sons of lobster fishermen and fishermen themselves and listen to some of the most amazing rock and roll I have ever heard More
