I was recently commissioned to produce some artwork for an energy saving initiative called Enigin Scam Busters. Energy is something that has crossed my mind from time to time, but I’ve never paid it too much attention. As part of the research I did for designing some material, I had to dig deep into an industry that until now hadn’t even registered as a blip on my radar. Why should I care about how much energy I’m using as long as my laptop and computer work? Well it turns out that I care quite a lot now having come out the other end of the project older, wiser and surprisingly…more efficient.

Don’t get me wrong, I do my bit for the planet as much as the next girl. Just last week I bought some clothes from my local charity shop, saving myself some money and supporting those less fortunate then myself in the process. I have to say though that when it came to switching off lights at home and remembering to turn off the heating when I wasn’t there, I was not a poster child for energy efficiency. Being an illustrator tends to make a person more creative rather than efficient. The Enigin commission taught me that I could be both.

Did you know that by turning down your heater by only 5 degrees can save you up to 21% more on your gas bill per year? I didn’t. Did you also know that by ensuring your house/flat is properly insulated you can save up to 40% more on your heating per year? I didn’t, and to be honest before this I didn’t really care either. I just tried to pay the bills whenever they hit the doormat. Working on the scam busters project posed these questions and more to me whilst I was trying to come up with a design for the initiative. Bizarrely they have made me now somewhat paranoid about leaving lights and heaters on when I’m not in the room. For someone who usually takes at least 2 months to figure out how the thermostat on the boiler works, I’d say that is quite an achievement. Well done Enigin! Not only did they pay me for doing something I love, but they’ve also made me more energy efficient. It’s a shame they couldn’t get me to sort out my taxes properly, but I suppose a girl can’t have everything.

Anyway, after I’d spent hours going through my place and ticking off all the things I could do to save energy (and conversely; money!) I finally began to come up with some ideas on what sort of artwork would be useful for the scam busters project. If you’ve ever been a writer or illustrator or done anything creative on a regular basis, then you’ll know that it’s usually a trial by error process. You spend hours scribbling down ideas and then another several hours crossing out all the ideas you thought were brilliant earlier on. Eventually you trip across one idea that seems to stand out above all the rest or keeps returning to haunt your mind. The Enigin scam busters project was no different and I will be forever grateful to them for paying me to be more energy efficient!

It is just that they believe they have grown up and no longer need to keep track of comic books and enjoy the same. Well, call me a girl who has refused to grow up but there is no denying that I love comics. You will probably find the largest stock of comics in bathrooms Surbiton if you visit my house. So, what is it that I love so much about comics?

Well, it is a parallel world that is based on the world we live in but consists of characters that are so colorful and vivid. From action hero comics to simple comics that go no further beyond a house - each and every single strip is a universe within itself. Of course, I simply love the idea of humor in comic strips. Sometimes, I find the most poignant statements ever made in these comic strips. This is the reason why I spend most of my disposable income towards purchasing these books.

Of course, I have my friends who insist that I should purchase some food as well. I am really glad that these comics are available on computers and e-book readers as well. This has made it easier for me to carry around my entire comic book library where ever I go.

Working in illustration, every now and again you get a job which you’re not sure what to do with. One such job came through my door last week, or should I say office…

The brief was to design leaflets advertising a new RMN jobs course (RMN stands for Registered Mental Nurse) happening in central London. It had to feature the following:

An illustration of a registered mental nurse.

An illustration of a patient.

Some words integrated into the design which made being a RMN sound both exciting and responsible and fulfilling.

A title which wasn’t condescending or childish, but that was fun too…

So, as you can see, I had quite a challenge on my hands.

it’s all about establishing the right tone, don’t you know

Here, now, is how I went about solving the problem. Feel free to steal my ideas if you’re just starting out in illustration, too.

1. I started by looking at what leaflets had been done in the past: this is always a good first thing to do, and it makes sure that you don’t do something outdated. I also looked at past advertising campaigns across the board in the NHS, to see if I could find any inspiration there or anything to guide me.

2. I then worked on some fonts, running the ideas by someone who is more experienced. I looked at different kinds of fonts which have been used for everything from child’s wear to fun and lively magazine typefaces. Then I tried to find the most suitable one and looked at placement.

3. Now I had a vague idea of where I was going, and which colours I was going to use to establish the right tone (it’s all about establishing the right tone, don’t you know). My next job was to go through a photo archive and find a fairly up to date photo of a nurse which I could make a picture of. This was crucial, as I didn’t want to give the impression that the job was old fashioned.

4. Finding a photo of a patient – which would be illustrated, like the photo of the nurse – was trickier, so in the end I decided to make the nurse the focus and have the patient in the background doing some fun activity.

Now I had all this I could create a mock up, using the photograph as the basis of an illustration. Which worked a treat, and made the client very happy.

You’d think by now that I would have the whole conversion thing pretty well figured out, I’m almost embarrassed to say that this just isn’t so. While I’ve found that there are many differences in spelling and the use of words here in London compared to back home the one issue that continues to stump me are measurements and conversions.
This is no more apparent than anytime I need fuel services, whether it is to put gas in my car or to order heating fuel for the winter time. I recently moved to a new place and bought a newer used car so the combination of the two has me scrambling to figure out the conversions all over again. Now make no mistake, it isn’t that I am not a smart woman, but when I’m in a hurry and I need to take time trying to figure out how much gas I need to fill my car having to do the math to convert gallons to litres it is just a pain. Often times I either end up with only a half a tank or needing to go back inside the fuel station because I over estimated how much gas my car could take.
I have to admit, I’ve gotten a little better since I came here, however each time I move to a new apartment or in this case when I bought a new vehicle I find myself in this same silly predicament. I think I may have hit on a sure fire way to keep it together this time though. I asked a friend of mine (and native Londoner) to help me figure out exactly how much fuel (in litres) that I need for a full gas and heating fuel tank. We then made a chart for each showing what the amounts are if I want a ¼ tank, ½ tank, etc. Now I keep a copy of the chart in my glove compartment and one on the refrigerator to avoid any more embarrassment and so far it’s working.

I have been thinking a lot about what makes a person feel at home. My friend told me that the Bedouin people who are often on the move and have no place that they call home, invoke their sense of home by singing their songs. For these nomadic people home is where you pitch your tent and sing your song.
